Richmond’s Brand New Secondary College Takes Shape

The proposed site of Richmond’s new secondary college has been selected and the planning committee that will kick start its creation is ready to get to work.

Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Richmond Richard Wynne joined members of the planning committee today to make the announcement.

The Richmond New School Planning Committee currently includes representatives from local schools, the City of Yarra, local community group Richmond High School Choices, and the Department of Education and Training.

The Committee will provide strategic advice on the development of the school’s vision and curriculum, and will work with the local community, education experts and key stakeholders.

Representatives from Leo Berry’s Boxing Gym and Richmond Union Bowls Club will also be closely involved in planning for the proposed new school design.

The Andrews Labor Government made a $10 million election commitment to get on with the first stage of the school.

The $1 million funding for the school announced in the 2015-2016 Victorian Budget kick starts the initial planning stages of the project, including site feasibility of the proposed location on Gleadell Street.

The Budget invests close to $4 billion in Victorian education and training – the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.

It includes a total of $111 million to support the delivery of 10 new schools in Melbourne’s growth and established areas, including secondary colleges in Richmond and Prahran.

It also provides $325 million to refurbish or rebuild 67 schools, and will fund the first stage of an extensive asbestos removal program so that families can be assured their children are being educated in safe schools.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education James Merlino

“We promised a new secondary school for Richmond – and we’re getting on with it.”

“We’re working with locals and making sure that the school meets the needs of this growing community, giving students a quality local education.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Richmond Richard Wynne

“We’re building a school that is close to home and has the stamp of this proud community. The location is set and the committee is ready to get to work.”\
